Europe: Energy transition towards greener alternatives

With fuel prices increasing continuously and with no prospect of improvement, predictions for see a political, economic and social dilemma in Europe. Time is short as well as the number of options; therefore, greener alternatives must be a bet.On the 17th, it was reported by the Bloomberg newspaper that the National Commission for Development and Reform of China prohibited the country’s broad energy companies from reselling energy. Thus, the foreign Liquefied Natural Gas companies aim exclusively at domestic supply, avoiding exports to Europe. In Brussels, the European Commission proposal acknowledges a “temporary dynamic price corridor” as a way to limit the price of natural gas. The objective is to create an interval below the market value to avoid excessive price fluctuations, which is comparable to the lower limit of the famous “Money Serpent”. This measure a component of the second emergency package for policy intervention, which applicability is for just three months. However, such measure implementation requires the approval of the 27 countries; and, for example, Germany, Austria, and the Netherlands argue that such limits could import gas savings or slow down the economy. And, in Portugal, the strategic bet are renewable energies because: i) the objective is to be one of the first four European countries to abandon coal; and, the Government, believes that the current energy crisis does not affect the decision to shut down Pego thermoelectric power plant; ii) 80% of production comes from renewable sources 2026. However, some experts argue that the country’s production capacity is strongly biased by fossil fuels. The immediate consequence, in order to accelerate the energy transition, is to provide 2,100 million euros by the Government through the Government budget for 2023. The investment areas acknowledged are: i) vehicle fleet renewal; ii) buildings renovation; iii) installation of photovoltaic panels and other equipment for more efficient buildings (connection to energy certification).
